Automatic Customization Framework for Efficient Vehicle Routing System Deployment
Vehicle routing systems provide several advantages over manual transportation planning and they are attracting growing attention. However, deployment of these systems can be prohibitively costly, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises: the customization, integration, and migration is laborious and requires operations research expetise. We propose an automated configuration workflow for vehicle routing system and data flow customization, which provides the necessary basis for more experimental work on the subject. Our preliminary results with learning and adaptive algorithms support the assumption of applicability of the proposed configuration framework. The strategies presented h…
Producing Routing Systems Flexibly Using a VRP Metamodel and a Software Product Line
Routing problems occur in a wide variety of situations. Due to the heterogeneity of cases we do not yet know how to manage the complexity of addressing all the relevant aspects in logistic planning and solving the variety of different problem types in a cost-efficient way. In the last decade, we have witnessed an emergence of systematic approach into managing variation within a set of related software systems. This paper presents an application of these advances from software engineering into vehicle routing: we suggest the construction of a higher-level (meta-) model of routing problems and the application of a software product line approach. The proposed approach results in a flexible pro…

Scalable Deployment of Efficient Transportation Optimization for SMEs and Public Sector
Transportation planning is central activity in logistic network design. In this study, we examine the deployment of optimization methodology to transportation planning. More specifically, we examine the adoption of system solving the well-known combinatorial optimization problem, the vehicle routing problem (VRP). Its application has resulted in efficiency gains in transportation logistics, but they have not been very widespread, and especially small-scale operators have not yet benefited from these systems. In this paper, we present a prospective case study on the issues during deployment of optimization, especially in the context of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). We propose a novel …
