I fenomeni di abitazione informale si declinano in modalità eterogenee e complesse. La specificità dei contesti sud-europei induce a mettere in crisi i modelli che interpretano questi temi seguendo le esperienze anglosassoni o nord-europei e a sviluppare un filone di ragionamento teorico che tenti di scardinare il legame tra informalità e ritardo (economico, sociale, culturale). Il presente lavoro lega tre temi ampiamente dibattuti negli studi urbani ma raramente posti in connessione: la diffusione di pratiche partecipative e di cooperazione tra soggetti pubblici e privati, la ricerca-azione partecipativa (Participatory Action Research) e la formazione scientifica e professionale da impartire alle nuove generazioni di urbanisti. This chapter describes two research-action experiences that the authors have carried out over the last few years and which are linked to the themes of the Laboratorio del Cammino, as they frequently use the neighborhood walk technique as a tool for territorial knowledge and basis for a participatory planning of the neighborhood itself. Cosa significa “regione pianificata”, e perché parlarne? Tutto questo capitolo si confronterà con un’ambiguità di fondo, che proveremo ad affrontare fin dall’inizio, ma che non sarà possibile sciogliere del tutto. Il problema fondamentale è legato all’essenza stessa di “regione”, difficilmente definibile. Dovremmo considerarla come un dato spaziale, cioè un’entità geografica che esiste a prescindere dai suoi abitanti, dai processi storici che la possono modificare e dagli enti che la governano? O, piuttosto, la regione è l’esito dei processi che la pianificano? In questa seconda accezione, la regione andrebbe considerata come risultato più che come dato pre-esistente.
