Several essential oils from various plants and fruits have been characterized for their antibacterial activities in order to select new biopreservatives. The aim of this work was to evaluate the organoleptic effect of citrus essential oils to be applied in the processing of sheeps’ milk “Primo Sale” cheese and the inhibitory effect on the main bacterial pathogens of dairy interest. In order to better evaluate the antibacterial effect, the first approach was based on pasteurized milk, in view of the futur…
Thermodynamic and19F NMR studies of antimony trifluoride in water
Densities, specific heat capacities per unit volume and enthalpies of dilution at 25°C and osmotic coefficients at 37°C were measured for antimony trifluoride in water as functions of concentration. From the first three properties the apparent and partial molar volumes, heat capacities and relative enthalpies were derived. As well, pH measurements in water at 25°C and19F NMR spectra in water and methanol at 33°C were also carried out. All the thermodynamic properties together with the chemical shifts abruptly change in the very dilute concentration region (<0.1m) and, then, tend to a constant value. These trends have been rationalized through a simple model based on an equilibrium of dissoc…
Dielectric properties of solutions of antimony (III) halides in methanol
The complex permittivities obtained by time domain reflectometry (TDR) measurements in the frequency range 0.1–15 GHz are reported for solutions of SbF3, SbCl3 and SbBr3 in methanol at 25°C. By increasing the concentration of the solutes, a marked increase of the main relaxation time and of the static permittivity of methanol is observed. These effects have been attributed to the ability of antimony (III) halides to strengthen the hydrogen bonding in methanol and to promote the shift of the dynamic equilibria among the various populations of hydrogen bonded methanol aggregates toward those characterized by a parallel orientation of neighboring dipoles. A second relaxation, occurring at low …

Synthesis and chemico-physical characterization of tin(IV) complexes with some crown ethers
Abstract Some neutral adducts of diorganotin(IV) perchlorates and thiocyanates with three crown-ethers have been synthesised; they are of the type Me 2 SnX 2 L m · n H 2 O where m = 1 or 2, n = 2 or 4, X = ClO 4 or NCS, and L = 18-crown-6, 15-crown-5, and 12-crown-4. The values for m and n have been correlated with the coordinating ability of the two anions and with the steric hindrance by the crown ether molecules. From infrared and Mossbauer data, an octahedral coordination geometry is proposed for all the complexes. The Mossbauer parameters are discussed in terms of the electronegativity of the ligands on the tin(IV) center and of the distortions produced in the coordination polyhedra by…

The salt [(CH3)4N]2[Sb6O4(NCS)12] is the first identified thiocyanato-oxy-antimonate(III) complex. Reported are details of the synthesis, relevant infrared data and its x-ray structure. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 with Z = 2 (C10H12N7O2S6Sb3) and unit cell dimensions a = 11.314(6), b = 12.846(3), c = 8.679(2) A; α = 91.93(3)°, β = 90.31(3)° and γ = 99.13(3)°. It contains centrosymmetric [Sb6O4(NCS)12]2− anions packed with isolated tetramethyl-ammonium cations. The fundamental structural element of the anion is provided by the fusion of three SbOSbO rings forming a zig-zag portion of a ribbon, only slightly pleated. Peculiar is the unequivalence of the six thioc…
Authigenic phases and biomass contents drive Zr, Hf and REE distributions in anoxic lake sediments.
Abstract. REE, Zr and Hf distributions in seafloor sediments collected from the hypersaline, anoxic Thetis, Kryos, Medee and Tyro deep-sea basins from the Eastern Mediterranean were determined in light of their mineralogical composition, and biomass contents. Mineralogical investigations demonstrate that all the studied sediments show a similar mineralogy. Detritic assemblages mainly consist of quartz, gypsum and calcite with Mg contents ranging from 0 to about 7%, often of a bioclastic nature. On the contrary, authigenic parageneses are formed by halite, bischofite, dolomite and calcite, with Mg contents up to 22%. Textural evidences of biological activity were also identified. In sediment…

Computational Study on the Gas-Phase and Aqueous Solution Acidity of Nicotine
Dielectric continuum solvation models (1), recently introduced in the routine of computational chemistry, have allowed organic chemists to afford solvation free energies, thus getting a closer insight on the real thermodynamics of chemical reactions in solution. Hydron transfer reactions are by far the most studied due to their importance both in physico-chemical systems and in synthetic applications. Since, on the other hand, molecules have almost always a notable molecular flexibility, each computational assessment should certainly address an accurate conformational analysis of each species involved in the chemical equilibrium. This rather annoying and troublesome complication has been au…
Identification of aroma compounds of Vitis vinifera L. flowers by SPME GC-MS analysis
Using a gas chromatographic method (GC-MSanalysis), it was possible to determine the volatile constituent of an odorous flower from Vitis vinifera varieties growing in Sicily. More than 50 compounds were identified and the technique allowed us to determine that sesquiterpenes, as well as monoterpenes such as limonene and cymene, were the principal components. The odour-profiles allowed us to distinguish between variety groups or even single varieties.
