Peripheral Glucagon-like peptide 2 administration inhibits food intake in mice: Analysis of the mechanism of action.

OBJECTIVE: Previously we showed that, in mice, peripheral administration of glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2) or [Gly2]GLP-2, the degradation-resistant analogue of GLP-2, reduces food intake in the short term. The purposes of the present study were to compare the influence of [Gly2]GLP-2 with the anorectic effect induced by glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and to analyze the mechanism of action responsible for GLP-2-induced effects. METHODS: Food intake was measured in mice, fasted for 16-18 h, at the first hour following peptide or vehicle intraperitoneally (i.p.) administration. The effects of GLP-2 (3-33), GLP-2 receptor (GLP-2R) antagonist, and exendin (9-39), GLP-1R antagonist were also e…

Ba/Ca evolution in water masses of the Mediterranean late Neogene

A Mediterranean composite sedimentary record was analyzed for Ba/Ca ratios on carbonate shells of Orbulina universa planktonic foraminifer (Ba/Ca) carb providing the opportunity to study and assess the extent of freshwater inputs on the basin and possible impacts on its dynamics during the Tortonian to Recent period. A number of scanning electron microscope analyses and auxiliary trace element measurements (Mn, Sr, and Mg), obtained from the same samples, exclude important diagenetic effects on the studied biogenic carbonates and corroborate the reliability of (Ba/Ca) carb ratios in foraminifera calcite as indicators of seawater source components during the studied interval. A long-term tre…

The Carnian/Norian boundary interval at Pizzo Mondello (Sicani Mountains, Sicily) and its bearing for the definition of the GSSP of the Norian Stage

We present the magnetostratigraphy and stable isotope stratigraphy from an expanded (~430-m-thick) Upper Triassic marine limestone section at Pizzo Mondello, Sicily, and review published biostratigraphic information that can be used to defi ne the location of the conodont Carnian-Norian and Norian-Rhaetian boundaries in this section. Pizzo Mondello offers good potential for magneto-stratigraphic correlation of marine biostrati-graphic and chemostratigraphic data with the continental Newark astrochronological polarity time scale (APTS) for development of an integrated Late Triassic time scale. The relatively stable average values of δ18O centered on 0‰ are a strong indication that the Cherty …
