Pruritus characteristics in a large Italian cohort of psoriatic patients
Background: Psoriasis (Ps) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease associated with pruritus in 64–98% of patients. However, few modestly sized studies assess factors associated with psoriatic pruritus. Objective: To investigate factors associated with Ps pruritus intensity. Methods: Psoriasis patients 18 years or older seen in one of 155 centres in Italy between September 2005 and 2009 were identified from the Italian PsoCare registry. Patients without cutaneous psoriasis and those with missed information on pruritus were excluded. Results: We identified 10 802 patients, with a mean age 48.8 ± 14.3 years. Mild itch was present in 33.2% of patients, moderate in 34.4%, severe in 18.7% and ve…
L’Italiano e l’alfabeto per i nuovi arrivati
In recent years, thousands of refugees and asylum seekers have arrived at the port of Palermo, including a large number of teenagers without any adult caregivers. They are called Unaccompanied Minors. A significant part of them remain in the city and are placed in Italian language courses of the University of Palermo, (ItaStra), within a large inclusion project. The focus of this paper will be address to describe this new profile of learner: they are minors, 15 to 17 years old, without much formal education or training, without competent skills in reading or writing, but with a vast life experience in a multilingual environment and exposure to learning a diversity of new languages.

What's So Speciall About Euclidean Distance? A Characterization Result with Applications to Mobility and Spatial Voting
In this paper we investigate the problem of measuring social mobility when the social status of individuals is given by their rank. In order to sensibly rep- resent the rank mobility of subgroups within a given society, we address the problem in terms of partial permutation matrices which include standard (“global”) matrices as a special case. We first provide a characterization of a partial ordering on partial matrices which, in the standard case of global matrices, coincides with the well-known “concordance” ordering. We then provide a characterization of an index of rank mo- bility based on partial matrices and show that, in the standard case of comparing two global matrices, it is equiv…
Testo, parola, sillaba, andata e ritorno.
Logic and the Myth of the Perfect Language
We argue that the dream of a ‘perfect language’ – namely, a universal, unambiguous and semantically transparent medium of expression –, whose intriguing story has been told by Umberto Eco (1993), is deeply intertwined with the myth of instant rationality: the idea that a perfect language is one in which all logical relations becomeimmediatly visible, so that the language itself “does the thinkingfor us” (Frege 1884). In the first part of this paper we trace this versionof the dream in the works of Leibniz, Frege, Russell and Wittgenstein. In the second part we re-examine it in the light of more recent negative results in logic and theoretical computer science.
