Si illustrano i risultati di quattro campagne (dal 2007 al 2010) di prospezione archeologica condotte nel territorio intorno alla villa di Cignana, toponimo - forse da un originario Liciniana - che documenta la probabile esistenza di una vasta proprietà agricola in età imperiale romana. La prospezione, condotta in modo intensivo e sistematico all’interno di un ampio comprensorio ed associata ad un GIS, documenta tutte le fasi di vita del territorio, ricchissimo di testimonianze dal Neolitico all’alto medioevo, con lo scopo di cogliere i modi di sfruttamento delle risorse e le principali dinamiche di trasformazione del popolamento.

In this paper, we discuss the results of an artefact survey and a sampling collection in the indigenous settlement of Terravecchia di Cuti, in the chora of the Greek colony of Himera (Sicily). The whole area of the town was gridded with squares of 10x10 m to isolate functional areas and identify the most interesting zones for new archaeological samples. The survey was carried out in two fields (9400 m2), counting and recording all findings. Only diagnostic pottery and figured pottery, antefixes, loom weights, millstones and so on were collected. A tre anni dall'inizio del progetto di prospezione archeologica a carattere intensivo e sistematico condotto nel comprensorio di Cignana (circa 20 km ad Est di Agrigento), si illustrano i risultati preliminari della ricerca. Di particolare interesse è la fitta trama di insediamenti nei quali si rinviene solo industria litica in selce, cui si affiancano i numerosi frequentati nell'età del Bronzo; significative le attestazioni di età arcaica e classica e delle ceramiche della facies di S. Angelo Muxaro-Polizzello.

The aim of this report is to present the results of rescue excavations, executed in order to contrast illegal excavation at the necropolis at Baucina, in northwestern Sicily, where Punic, Greek and indigenous traditions coexisted. Their relationship is the focus of the ongoing research. The archaeological dataset demonstrates that the interaction between three different ethnicities resulted in an impressive variety of rituals.

The contribution examines the complex archaeological data produced by the survey carried out in the region of Alesa, in an attempt to recognise the essential elements of the system of collection and distribution of water in rural settlements. The archaeological data are integrated with what can be obtained from the well-known ‘Table of Alesa’, and with other toponymical, environmental, morphological, and geological information. The results are compared with known data in areas with similar characteristics along the northern coast of Sicily.

The aim of the Cignana Project (Agrigento, Sicily) is to analyse the geographic context of a villa of imperial age, where a systematic archaeological survey has carried out since 2007, in order to detect the ancient settlements from prehistoric to medieval times. The archaeological data are analyzed by GIS methodologies (3D, supply basins, shortest path analysis), to understand intervisibility and interrelationship between sites of different rank, and finally to try and find out the resources available during the different periods.

This report describes the activities and results of two years of archaeological excavations carried out by the University of Palermo at the site of Halaesa, in northern Sicily. The excavations revealed the structure of the ancient city walls (maybe built in two different phases, during the Late Hellenistic/Early Roman peri-od) and the presence of a tank close to the wall, connected to the defense sistem.
