The known Bronze Age settlements between the Île-de-France and Champagne are usually small, unenclosed family farms. The Villiers-sur-Seine site, however, built in a visible and accessible location that enabled control of activities on the nearby river, is completely different: the two large buildings and their annexes were protected by a system of ditches and an ostentatious palisade. With the emergence of manufacturing based economies, specialised productions take on new dimensions during the Neolithic. Production networks progressively develop during the Neolithic and the Metal Ages and can be characterised according to their scale, how they are organised, the status of producers and the intensification of the trade of manufactured goods. This results on the one hand in mass production and on the other in the creation of highly technical objects on demand within a complex economic system of consumption and exchange. La fosse 264 du Néolithique récent de Vignely « La Noue Fénard » (Seine-et-Marne)

A pit dating to the Recent Neolithic was discovered at Vignely, la Noue-Fenard during work on a Middle Neolithicenclosure that backed on to an ancient bank of the river Marne. The cylindrical structure, the primary function of which has not yetbeen determined, was used as a refuse pit and contained a particularly rich collection of finds, notably wild animal bones, stoneobjects, bone tools, grinding tools and pottery.
