High-spin study of 119Xe

Abstract High-spin states have been populated in 54 119 Xe via the 96 Mo( 27 Al,p3n) reaction at 133 MeV, using the Jurosphere γ-ray spectrometer to record triple γ-ray coincidences. The known level scheme has been significantly extended and several band crossings identified. In particular, the νh 11 2 yrast band has been extended to I π = ( 83 2 − ) and shows features which are consistent with those of smooth band termination at high spin. Theoretical results for 119 Xe at high spin are discussed within the framework of cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations, together with results for 117 Xe.

Recoil isomer tagging in the proton-rich odd-odd N = 77 isotones, 142Tb and 144Ho

A fusion-evaporation reaction has been employed to search for isomeric states in the near-proton drip-line N577 isotones, 65 142Tb and 67 144Ho. The recoiling nuclei were implanted into a silicon detector at the focal plane of a gas-filled separator, where a recoil isomer tagging technique was employed to correlate prompt and delayed g-ray transitions across isomeric states. New states were observed to be built upon a known 15-ms isomer in 142Tb and the feeding and decay of a new 500(20)-ns isomeric state was established in 144Ho. γ-ray spectroscopy of neutron-deficientTe110. II. High-spin smooth-terminating structures

High-spin states have been populated in Te-110(52) via Ni-58(Ni-58,alpha 2p gamma) reactions at 240 and 250 MeV. The Gammasphere gamma-ray spectrometer was used in conjunction with the Microball charged-particle detector. The high-spin (I>30) collective level scheme of Te-110, up to similar to 45h, is discussed in this paper. Four new decoupled (Delta I=2) high-spin structures have been observed for the first time, together with two strongly coupled (Delta I=1) bands. These bands all show the characteristics of smooth band termination, and are discussed within the framework of the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky approach.

Effects of one valence proton on seniority and angular momentum of neutrons in neutron-rich Sb51122–131 isotopes

Background: Levels fulfilling the seniority scheme and relevant isomers are commonly observed features in semimagic nuclei; for example, in Sn isotopes (Z=50). Seniority isomers in Sn, with dominantly pure neutron configurations, directly probe the underlying neutron-neutron (νν) interaction. Furthermore, an addition of a valence proton particle or hole, through neutron-proton (νπ) interaction, affects the neutron seniority as well as the angular momentum. Spectroscopy of 161Hf from low to high spin

Excited states in the neutron-deficient nucleus 161 72Hf89 have been populated using the 118Sn(48Ti,5n) 161Hf and 110Pd(56Fe,5n) 161Hf fusion-evaporation reactions at 240 and 270 MeV, respectively. The level scheme for 161Hf has been extended with the observation of new band structures and an I π = (13/2+) isomeric state with a half-life of 4.8(2) μs has been identified. The decay path from this isomer to the (7/2−) ground state is established. The yrast band, based on the (13/2+) isomeric state, is extended up to (73/2+) and side band structures are identified up to (69/2−) and (55/2−). Influence of fusion barrier distributions on spin populations

Abstract Heavy-ion fusion barrier distributions are now routinely obtained directly from experimental data. By measuring the total γ -ray multiplicity for the 58 Ni + 60 Ni system, which has a striking yet well understood barrier distribution, we show that some evidence of the barrier structures is present in the derived spin populations. In particular, very high spins can be populated at energies rather close to (and even below) the ‘nominal’ Coulomb barrier.

Structure of high-spin states in Pd

High-spin states of the neutron deficient (100)pd nucleus have been investigated via the Cr-50(Ni-58, 4p alpha) and Zn-70(S-36,6n) heavy-ion induced reactions. For the detection of evaporated particles and gamma rays the NORDBALL array equipped with ancillary detectors and the EUROGAM II detector system were utilized. By the use of in-beam spectroscopic methods 89 transitions belonging to (100)pd have been observed, 49 of which were identified for the first time. Recoil-isomer tagging techniques at RITU

Techniques have been developed to study isomeric states in nuclei with the use of RITU (gas filled separator) at the University of Jyvaskyla. The first was the recoil-isomer tagging technique initially, utilised by D.M. Cullen to study the K π = 8− isomeric state in 138Gd [1]. The juro-sphere array was employed in conjunction with ritu and a focal plane array which consisted of several Compton-suppressed Germanium detectors, placed in close geometry around a multi wire proportional counter (mwpc) and a silicon strip detector used for the implantation of recoiling nuclei. Evidence of octupole-phonons at high spin in 207Pb

A lifetime measurement of the 19/2 state in Pb has been performed using the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift (RDDS) method. The nuclei of interest were produced in multi-nucleon transfer reactions induced by a Pb beam impinging on a Mo enriched target. The beam-like nuclei were detected and identified in terms of their atomic mass number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer while the prompt γ rays were detected by the AGATA tracking array. DESPEC (DEcay SPECtroscopy) is a spectrometer, currently under construction, which is to be used at the FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) facility at GSI Darmstadt, Germany, as part of the NuSTAR (Nuclear STructure, Astrophysics and Reactions) project. Its goal is to analyse the decay of exotic nuclei produced via the Super-FRS (SUPERconducting FRagment Separator). The optimal configuration of certain elements of the spectrometer, namely a HPGe (High Purity Germanium) tracking array, is still under consideration. Pairing-quadrupole interplay in the neutron-deficient tin nuclei: First lifetime measurements of low-lying states in 106,108Sn

The lifetimes of the low-lying excited states 2(+) and 4(+) have been directly measured in the neutron-deficient Sn-106,Sn-108 isotopes. the nuclei were populated via a deep-inelastic reaction and the lifetime measurement was performed employing a differential plunger device. the emitted gamma rays were detected by the AGATA array, while the reaction products were uniquely identified by the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. Identification of theKπ=8−rotational band in138Gd

A ${K}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}{=8}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ collective rotational band has been established upon the 6 $\ensuremath{\mu}$s isomeric state in the very neutron-deficient nucleus ${}^{138}\mathrm{Gd}.$ The band was observed using a technique involving the correlation of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray transitions across the isomeric state. The single-particle configuration of the isomer has been deduced from the $\ensuremath{\Delta}I=2$ to $\ensuremath{\Delta}I=1$ intensity branching ratios. Abstract Heavy-ion fusion barrier distributions are now routinely obtained directly from experimental data. Measurements of the total γ-ray multiplicity for the fusion channels of the 58 Ni + 60 Ni system, which has striking yet well understood barrier structures, confirm the theoretical predictions that very high spins can be populated at energies close to (and even below) the nominal Coulomb barrier. The mapping from multiplicities to spin populations shows that structures in the barrier distribution are still evident in the γ-ray results.

Magnetic properties of smooth terminating dipole bands in 110,112Te

Three strongly coupled sequences have been established in Te-110,Te-112 up to high spins. They are interpreted in terms of deformed structures built on proton 1-particle-1-hole excitations that reach termination at I similar to 40h. This is the first observation of smooth terminating dipole structures in this mass region. Lifetime measurements have allowed the extraction of experimental B(M 1; 1 -> I - 1) and B(E2; I -> I - 2) reduced transition rates for one of the dipole bands in Te-110. Smooth terminating bands inTe112: Particle-hole induced collectivity

The Gammasphere spectrometer, in conjunction with the Microball charged-particle array, was used to investigate high-spin states in Te-112 via Ni-58(Ni-58, 4p gamma) reactions at 240 and 250 MeV. Several smooth terminating bands were established, and lifetime measurements were performed for the strongest one using the Doppler-shift attenuation method. Evidence of Partial Seniority Conservation in the pi g9/2 Shell for the N=50 Isotones

The reduced transition probabilities for the 4-> and 2->0 transitions in 92Mo and 94Ru and for the 4->2 and 6->4 transitions in 90Zr have been determined in this experiment making use of a multinucleon transfer reaction. These results have been interpreted on the basis of realistic shell-model calculations in the f5/2, p3/2, p1/2, and g9/2 proton valence space. Only the combination of extensive lifetime information and large scale shell-model calculations allowed the extent of the seniority conservation in the N=50 g9/2 orbital to be understood. The conclusion is that seniority is largely conserved in the first πg9/2 orbital.

Excited states have been identified in the very neutron-deficient N = Z + 3 nucleus 111Xe for the first time, using the 58Ni(58Ni, αn) heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reaction. γ -ray transitions have been unambiguously assigned to 111Xe by correlation with the characteristic 111Xe → 107Te → 103Sn α-decay chain using the method of recoil-decay tagging. Isospin Properties of Nuclear Pair Correlations from the Level Structure of the Self-Conjugate Nucleus Ru88

The low-lying energy spectrum of the extremely neutron-deficient self-conjugate (N = Z) nuclide 88 44Ru44 has been measured using the combination of the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) spectrometer, the NEDA and Neutron Wall neutron detector arrays, and the DIAMANT charged particle detector array.
