Early DEtection of wEaring off in Parkinson disease: The DEEP study

Assessing the frequency of Wearing-Off (WO) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, and its impact on Quality of Life (QoL). METHODS: Consecutive ambulatory patients, who were on dopaminergic treatment for ≥ 1 year, were included in this multicentre, observational cross-sectional study. In a single visit, WO was diagnosed based on neurologist assessment as well as using the validated Italian version of a patient self-rated 19-question Wearing-Off Questionnaire (WOQ-19); WO was defined for scores ≥ 2. QoL was evaluated by the 8-item Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-8). RESULTS: 617 subjects were included, with a mean anti-Parkinson treatment duration of 6.6 ± 4.6 years, 87.2% were on lev…

TISSUE ENGINEERING FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL INVITRO MODELS OF HUMAN MUCOSAE

Traditional two-dimensional (2D) cell cultures only partially reflect the morpho-molecular pattern of human cells in tissues, and they are also unable to fully mimic the complexity of the in vivo microenvironment. Cell development in in vivo systems differs significantly from classical 2D cell culture models, especially with regard to the morphology, growth kinetics, gene expression and the degree of differentiation. Tissue engineering allows the reproduction of tissues by cell seeding on biocompatible scaffolds, to form a homogenous ...

Role of chronic exsposure to cigarette smoke on endoglin/CD105 expression in airway epithelium.

Dysregulation of airway epithelial cell function related to cigarette smoke exposure plays an important role in the pathophysiology of COPD and is associated to tissue damage and disease severity. CD105 is a component of the receptor complex of TGF-β, a pleiotropic cytokine involved in cellular proliferation, differentiation and migration. CD105 regulates the expression of different components of the extracellular matrix suggesting a role of CD105 in cellular transmigration and remodeling processes. The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression of endoglin/CD105 in airway epithelium of COPD patients and its involvement in tissue remodeling and progression of COPD. We evalua…

SAPERI AL PLURALE. VOCI SGUARDI PROSPETTIVE SULLA COMPLESSITA' DELLA CONOSCENZA

The complexity of knowledge requires multiple and plural research approaches, willing to interact and to dialogue with each other in view of the construction of new cognitive paradigms and new paths of research. Almost sixty years have passed since the publication of the famous pamphlet by C.P. Snow, The Two Cultures, (1959), which denounced the drastic separation between scientific and humanistic culture, however, resistance to a true and widespread practice of interdisciplinary research is still strong in the academic and institutional environments. In some cases the loss of the specificity of the research sectors is feared, in others there is doubt about the effectiveness of the dialogue…
