Mineral weathering, clay mineral formation and rubefication of Terrae calcis in Slovakia — A contribution to paleoclimatic evidence of limestone Rotlehm (terra rossa) in Central Europe Limestone Rotlehm (Terra rossa) is very often interpreted as a product of intensive mineral weathering and clay formation under subtropic (to tropic) climate. Especially the formation of hematite in soils as the main process of rubefication is generally believed to occur only in warm climates with a seasonal alternation of precipitation and drought. 57Fe-Mosbauer-spektroskopische Transmissions- und Reflexionsmessungen wurden zur Aufklarung der qualitativen und quantitativen Zusammensetzung von Deckschichten auf der Innenseite von Rohren aus Naturumlaufkesseln vorgenommen. Die Deckschichten waren bei 120 bis 174 atu, 320 bis 353 °C, einem pH-Wert zwischen 9,5 und 10,5 und einem Gehalt an P2O5 und SiO2 von < 10 bzw. < 4 mg/l auf den Rohrinnenflachen (Werkstoff 15 Mo 3: 0,12%C, 0,15% Si, 0,5% Mn, 0,04% P, 0,04% S, ⩽ 0,3% Cr, 0,25% Mo, Rest Fe; St. 45. 8. Short range ordering and phase separation in rapidly quenched Ni80 57Fe1P19 amorphous alloys solution treated at different temperatures

Abstract  Electrochemical measurements and Mossbauer spectroscopy were used to study a rapidly quenched Ni80 57Fe1P19 amorphous alloy solution treated between 920 and 1500 °C. Different short range orderings were shown in amorphous alloys solution treated at different temperatures. This finding can be associated with phase separation occurring in the liquid state. This phase separation can be inherited in slightly relaxed amorphous state.

Over-estimation of efficiency of weathering in tropical “Red Soils”: its importance for geoecological problems

Abstract Weathering and soil formation rates are regarded as the main criteria of a tolerable soil loss. The efficiency of weathering in the seasonal semiarid tropics has often been greatly over-estimated especially in the geomorphologic literature in which weathering is assumed to be as fast or even faster than surface erosion. Six selected “Red Soils” in two intramontane basins of hyperthermic SW Nepal near the border with India, with 1500–1750 mm annual rainfall (5 humid months), and a “Black Soil” near Baroda, Gujarat, India (3–4 humid months) were studied mineralogically.
