Culinary List Form in the Experimental Poetry of 1960s Finland: Literary Menus and Recipes

AbstractThis chapter investigates the close relationship between the list form and experimental writing, and the poetic and literary usage of the form in the ideologically countercultural experimental setting of the 1960s. The focus is on Finnish literature of the decade and texts that utilize the culinary forms of recipe and menu, both of which are essentially based on listing. The texts examined, thus, combine two traditions: the history of food listings in literature, and the fondness for the list form in experimental and avant-garde traditions. Fictitious recipes, impossible meals: a subgenre of comical literature The article looks into ctitious and imaginative food recipes and comical potentiality of such food related text types as listings of ingredients, foodstuffs, dishes, or portions. The focus is on imaginary, fantastic, and impossible meals and recipes: portions that could not be implemented in the real world. The recipe as a form is covered from genre-theoretical, narratological, poetic and procedural perspectives. Literary Machines and Automata: Feedbacking Poetics The article discusses the concepts of “machine”, “automatic”, and “feedback loop” as literary and poetic ideas from the terminological, historical, and contemporary perspectives. All of them can be seen as somewhat paradoxical terms, carrying human and organic connotations with them. The key phenomenon of this article is the generator, a machine or system that produces – generates – text. The history of poetic automata extends well beyond the Internet, computer, or even electricity. Fictitious Meals, Culinary Constraints: The Recipe Form in Four Oulipian Texts

AbstractThis article looks into fictitious meals and the use of culinary recipe form in experimental and procedural literature, namely, works of constrained writing associated with OuLiPo (Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle). The recipe form is first scrutinized from the procedural, structural, and historical viewpoints, also concerning its lesser-known imaginative and esoteric genealogy. Artikkeli käsittelee readymade-taiteen ja löydettyjen teosten (found object, objet trouvé) vastineita 1960-luvun kotimaisessa kirjallisuudessa. Aineisto koostuu viiden tekijän – Väinö Kirstinän, Kari Aronpuron, Kalevi Lappalaisen, Eeva-Liisa Mannerin ja M. A. Nummisen – teksteistä. The Black Block : Opaque Page as a Graphic Device

The black block, a rectangle of black printing ink on the page of a book, surrounded by blank margins, is a peculiar graphic device. Its literary tradition has usually been considered to start from Tristram Shandy, which includes a renowned black page in memory of “poor Yorick”. Nevertheless, Sterne’s gimmick can be seen as an allusion to an older typographical tradition of the so-called mourning pages, which were featured in books remembering the departed decades before Tristram Shandy. In this article, we analyze the ways in which the black block is used in narrative literature, with examples chosen mainly from 20th century experimental fiction.
