Da alcuni decenni è emersa nella Winckelmann-Forschung la necessità di ricostruire la cultura ‘scientifica’ del padre dell’archeologia e in particolare l’ampia e complessa vicenda del suo studio della biologia e della medicina antiche e moderne. Si tratta in fin dei conti di ricostruire il substrato naturalistico che sta alla base della sua estetica giacché, come si legge in una celeberrima lettera a Berendis del 3 giugno 1755 dedicata alla genesi dei Pensieri sull’i mitazione, Winckelmann stesso era convinto che il valore della sua opera prima consistesse «principalmente in questo: 1. Nel fatto che per la prima volta è stato dato il massimo rilievo alla verosimiglianza della perfezione della natura nell’arte greca...» For several decades, the need to reconstruct the 'scientific' culture of the father of archeology and in particular the broad and complex story of his study of ancient and modern biology and medicine has emerged in the Winckelmann-Forschung.It is a question of reconstructing the naturalistic substrate that underlies its aesthetics since, as we read in a famous letter to Berendis of June 3, 1755 dedicated to the genesis of thoughts on imitation, Winckelmann himself was convinced that the value of his first work consisted "mainly of this: 1.
