description

Listening, viewing, reading and writing simultaneously is extremely difficult, especially in a foreign language. The present work exemplifies an innovative methodology in a pedagogical sequence for learning Spanish as a foreign language: the use of audiovisual comprehension questions embedded in the video as subtitles and synchronized with the relevant fragments. This teaching technique could provide various benefits in the while-viewing phase over viewings where the activity is available on a sheet of paper. Such benefits could include reducing the conflict of visual attention between viewing the video and doing the task, by spatially approximating the questions and the relevant fragments, and reducing the cognitive requirements of the activity, eliminating the need to pay attention to various questions at the same time. The teaching method is illustrated through the pedagogical exploitation of the first sequence of the film Ópera prima by Fernando Trueba.
