Dracunculiasis brings about repercussions on the social :- repercussions on mind : the disease is perceived by the people as a disease of fate, an illness caused by an enemy- social disorganization because of assistance to patients by the community members who are not affected- school absenteeism with its results- sterility caused by some localizations and which may have inffuence on demography. The economic repercussions, which are obvious because of the disability caused by the disease during agricultural activities could never be assessed to the true price. A sufficiently precise method for assessment is suggested here. The calculation of cost of agricultural loss in the community involves : - Dracunculiasis prevalence according to age, - number of days of agricultural activities, - mean number of days of total disability, - number of active patients equivalents, - annual agricultural product, - percentage of loss of annual agricutural product.Regarding to cost of treatment, although this one is not generally given in the villages, it has been evaluated at 7.150 F per patient for the medium clinical form and at 61. 600 F for the grave form. The economic cost of the disease has been assessed at 11.758.750 F for the 3 villages studied and at 1. 300.000.000 F for the whole Upper Volta.
