The present workoffers a synthetic review of the state of studies on a broadly-understood culture of Silesia and the language of this region. The author discusses the achievements of folklorists, experts in culture studies and linguists, especially those based in Opole Region and connected with the University of Opole and the State Scientific Institute – the Silesian Institute. Attention is paid to the continuing need for carrying out Silesian studies and the necessity of searching for new methodological solutions. The text also foreruns the appearance of a series of articles included in this monograph, which are devoted to the cultural heritage of Silesia – shownfrom different perspectives. The author presents the output of representatives of different environments and scientific domains (researchers of culture, linguists, historians, ethnologists, museologists) dealing with this heritage.
