description

This chapter aims at analyzing the role played by the Spanish Newsreel termed NO-DO as a nationalization phenomenon during the Francoism (1943-1975). Recurring to M. Billig concept of 'Banal nationalism', the texts examines how the newsreel, unlike the press and the radio, avoids problematic issues in the information transmitted and embodies the standard voice of the regime. In so doing, the newsreel's guidelines express a demobilisation strategy rather than a mobilisation one and, given its screening in all theaters and its exclusivity, contributed to create a state of mind defined by a lack of information and the dominance of soft news. What is instead stressed is a general atmosphere full of symbols, sites of memory, characters, as well as curiosities, sports, narrator voices, and so on, that differentiates NO-DO's role from other newsreels from Europe as well as from the US.
