Language islands are the source of many interesting materials in the field of research on language contacts concerning longer time periods in diachronic and synchronous approaches. They are particularly valuable for the research on minority languages and their existence among the majority speaking another language. Wilamowice and Schönwald municipalities represent German language islands in Silesia that date back to the colonization in the Middle Ages. Their research makes it possible not only to analyze their relations with reference to another German dialects but also to capture a wider development mechanisms of language extinction processes as well as the forms of their integration with the environment.
