Ladinia dolomitica

2020

2018

Language islands are the source of many interesting materials in the field of research on language contacts concerning longer time periods in diachronic and synchronous approaches. They are particularly valuable for the research on minority languages and their existence among the majority speaking another language. Wilamowice and Schönwald municipalities represent German language islands in Silesia that date back to the colonization in the Middle Ages. Their research makes it possible not only to analyze their relations with reference to another German dialects but also to capture a wider development mechanisms of language extinction processes as well as the forms of their integration with …

2011

Abstract In the field of languages for specific purposes, the diachronic study of medical dictionaries published in English is a territory that remains largely unchartered. The aim of this study is to pinpoint and analyse the emergence of the first medical glossaries and dictionaries in Great Britain so as to mark out the specialised territory of medical English. The specialised domain, as defined by Michel Petit, and the analysis of the passage from the specialised to the non-specialised domain put forward by Michel Van der Yeught provide the theoretical background to the study, which spans the 17th and 18th century. The corpus comprises both general English dictionaries and the first spec…

IE *weid- as a Root with Dual Subcategorization Features in the Homeric Poems.

2012

This paper is organized as follows: the first section sketches the theoretical background involved in the case study of Old Greek éidon/óida. As is well known, the aorist éidon takes only an accusative DP-object, while the perfect óida can take either a genitive or an accusative DP-object. Sections 2-5 I aim to prove that the diachronic development of the root *weid- in early Greek must be take into consideration to explain the synchronic phenomenon of dual subcategorization features. This root proves indeed to be polysemous and is split into two different meanings which are lexicalised by means of different bridging contexts and different morphological developments. In section 6 the peculi…

2007

In this paper we would like to compare the evolution of the syntax of polar contexts in Catalan and Spanish. By doing so, it would be possible to explain the greater syntactic disponibility of Catalan quantifiers and the important constraints for the same class of words in Spanish. After presenting in the first section the main theoretical questions about polarity in natural languages, we will describe in the second section the syntax of corresponding contexts in Middle Ages for both languages. Then, in the third section we will attend to the evolution towards current situation in order to understand the nature of modern differences between Catalan and Spanish on this area of their syntax.

2008

In this brief study we will carefully analyze the uses of arribar and aplegar in mediaeval language from Curial e Güelfa. Our goal is to discover when and up to which extent both verbs, arribar and aplegar, share their meaning during the first half of the 15th century, in order to shed light on the current situation of Valencian. At the same time, we will contrast the datum of this anonymous text with former, later and contemporary works from the datum of Corpus Informatitzat del Català Antic (CICA: 2007).
