Aspects of the body are important in Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain. Corporality, sensuality and biology are directly related to the motif of death in the novel. The physical aspect of death connects the triviality balancing on the edge of comedy with an unsettling aura of a fairy tale. In the isolated conditions of Berghof, Hans Castorp followed his instincts. In Davos, the reserved member of the bourgeoisie collided with an irrational and yet strictly material side of existence. The coalescence of life and death, the gradual revealing of all aspects of corporality goaded Hans Castorp into deepening his knowledge of the structure of the body, accepting obscene behaviour and advancing a provocative statement: "Form is a lie"
