Il saggio indaga sulla funzione simbolica del tema della morte nei romanzi siciliani post-risorgimentali, I vecchi e i giovani di Pirandello e Il Gattopardo di Tomasi di Lampedusa. La morte, infatti, non è solo tema ricorrente di queste opere; essa diviene figurazione simbolica della fine di un’era, di un mondo e di tutti gli oggetti materiali che ne incarnano l’emblema. È figura della fuga dal tempo e dalla storia, volontà di permanere nello spazio fittizio dei ricordi, un modo per restituire alla letteratura il compito che le è proprio, quello di far rivivere il rimosso, l’inaudito, il represso, l’escluso dalla storia The essay investigates the symbolic function of the theme of death in Sicilian novels, I vecchi e i giovani of Pirandello and Il Gattopardo of Tomasi di Lampedusa. Death, infact, is not only a recurring theme of these works; it becomes a symbolic figuration of the end of a era, of a world and of all the material objects that embody its emblem. It is a figure of the escape from time and history, a will to remain in the fictitious space of memories, a way to give back to literature the task that is its own, that of reviving the removed, the unheard-of, the repressed.
