Debate on the etymology of common Slavic slověne 'Slavs' has been running for several centuries. Summing up, we have two basic interpretative proposals. Traditional Indo-European Linguistics sees in Slavs a derivative of the Slavic root for 'word' (slovo), but many Slavists are more prone to consider the name Slavs as containing some sort of hydronymic designation. In a certain sense, both proposals are indeed compatible.
