The content of the present article focuses on the areas of education and the local environment. The study sought to answer the question "what is the role of the local government in the development of the local education system?". The transformation of the political system in Poland after 1989, including decentralisation of State power as well as the creation of independent local governments, has resulted in education being returned to the local dimension. Local government units have become supervisory bodies for schools and educational institutions, gaining significant prerogatives in both their management and finance. By going thought the appropriate stages of authority, the local governments have managed to take control of almost the entire education system, allowing them to tailor their own policies to benefit local conditions.
