Helping lecturers address and formulate teaching challenges: an exploratory study
2018
International audience; In this paper we present an exploratory study on the kind of questions or difficulties lecturers point out at the beginning of an educational course – to be addressed in it. These questions happen to be very general and are poorly connected to the knowledge to be taught. We suggest a twofold interpretation of this phenomenon. On the one hand, and in the line of the didactic transposition theory, teachers do not allow themselves to raise questions about the knowledge that is supposed to be their main field of expertise. On the other hand, the prevailing institutional pedagogy does not provide teachers with a fruitful enough conceptual frame to formulate this kind of q…
‘It Goes Around the World’ : Children’s Understanding of the Internet
2019
The Internet has become an important literacy environment, even for children. Therefore, building the foundations for their critical engagement with online information should start when they first enter school. One way to start is to help children build an understanding about the complexities of the Internet environment. The present study aimed at increasing our knowledge about children’s understanding of the Internet as a technical and social environment. It also explored how children perceive the trustworthiness of online information. The participants included 30 children aged 7–9 years. The children were interviewed and the data was analysed using content analysis. We share the results f…
Education for all : the hazard within fragile states
2012
Currently, over a third of children not in school live in countries considered being as fragile. These countries, which are mainly located in sub-Saharan Africa, will not reach the objectives of Education For All for 2015. This thesis covers approaches across comparative education, political science and sociology of organizations. It explores empirically the condi¬tions of achievement of EFA within the contexts of fragility. Despite its ambiguities, the notion of fragile states was adopted in 2005 as an operational concept by most of aid agencies. Definitions of fragile state converge on a set of specific criteria (dysfunctional institutions, chronic socio-political instability, limited acc…

The necessary skills in higher education: Validation of competences
2012
This paper tries to show which competences have an impact on the success of students in higher education and especially in the first academic year. This situation also requires finding a way to acquire the competences which are necessary in this new experience that is the first year. A student is considered to be a person who has the basic competences required. Our role is to show how this person in higher education can acquire the other new competences that help him/her attain the positive results that we name ''success''. Normally, the higher education is a new experience because he/she has never been in these situations before. To reach this goal we will first demonstrate a method to con…

This paper aims to identify some barriers to the development of distance and e-learning from the students' point of view. More precis…
