description

A drawing for the "parlatoio" of the Abbey of Santa Lucia in Syracuse A drawing attached to a document, dates back to 1838 kept in the Syracuse State Archives, shows the project for a space located next to the church of the Badia di Santa Lucia. A neo-greek style construction, called “parlatoio” is characterized by a cylindrical space covered with a coffered dome supported by fluted doric columns. The drawing is signed by the engineer Ignazio Giarrusso, known as a bridge designer, which here however deals with the construction of the dome. The choice of adopting a neoclassical language in a late phase was rare in this area of Sicily; here these choices belong to secondary professionals and this, compared to what happens in Palermo, represents an interesting topic of study.
