Historical studies have attempted to clarify what actually happened during the seizure of the Alcázar of Toledo by Republican troops from July to September in 1936. The Alcázar, however, as a lieu de mémoire, no longer existing as a real event, was transformed into a symbolic object, which was utilized to great advantage by the Franco regime in post-civil war society. This article considers the elements of story, myth, and symbolism of this lieu de mémoire, and identifies how this military exploit fit into the public image of the Franco regime.
