description

Romantic fantasy was one of the most important narrative and visual contributions of German cinema at the beginning of the 1920s. However, as the the decade progressed, this style was abandoned in favor of a growing realism and constructivist sets. The Testament of Doctor Mabuse marks a return to the realm of delirium which had characteried the beginnings of Expressionist cinematography as well as being the last work done in this style, as Nazismn was then on the rise. Most importantly, the film experiments with satanic characters and the transformation of the human voice.
