Masteroppgave bygg BYG508 - Universitetet i Agder 2018 This master-thesis investigates the effects on multi-story buildings generated by seismic loading and the potential diversity of results based on wrong assumptions in an early stage of engineering. A point of focus has been the different capacities of the horizontal slabs in the building, and if it is possible to use results from the modal-analysis directly for further calculations. Because seismic loading often causes large horizontal forces, we have also considered different methods for improving capacities regarding in-plane shear-forces. The results indicate that some factors affect the results considerably relative to the forces that are generated by seismic loading, both on shear-walls and horizontal slabs. In many cases this could lead to difficulties due to the relatively small capacity to withstand in-plane forces. Furthermore, our work shows that it is possible to communicate results from the FEM-program directly to other companies for calculations. It is also shown that there are solutions for improving the longitudinal shear capacity of hollow core slabs which could be useful in dimensioning of constructions for seismic loads
