description

Byczyna is today a small city, located in the northern part of the Opolskie Voivodeship. This stronghold is famous for well-preserved city walls, as well as for its history, especially that associated with the memorable battle of 1588. Of course, here is the clash between the troops led by Jan Zamoyski (1542-1605) and Archduke Maximilian III of Habsburg (1558-1618), which ended in the defeat of the latter. This event had a great impact on the history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, as it pushed the Habsburgs away from royal power, as well as consolidated the rule of the Vasa dynasty. The Battle of Byczyna was an armed clash in which a representative of different nations met – Poles, Germans, Moravians, Hungarians, and finally Silesians serving in the army of the Archduke. Many of them fell and were injured. The losses were particularly high among Maximilian’s soldiers, and they did not bypass the inhabitants of Byczyna. The subject of this article will, therefore, be the character of such an alleged veteran who we can associate with this clash, and who died tragically many years after the battle mentioned above and was buried in the cemetery located near the church of St. Nicholas in Byczyna.
