opennessThe article is devoted to the social dimension of linguistic phenomena occurring in Opole region. The Signum specificum of this region consists of: the dialect as a criterion for delimiting the Silesian group and the German language with the related issue of bilingualism. The aim of the article is to present the scope of research conducted by sociologists from Opole on the subject of the diverse linguistic phenomena occurring in the region. The article GWI2DZstates the theoretical and methodological assumptions of the new project of sociological research on bilingualism and multilingualism in the region, and presents the results of a pilot study conducted in 2019 among high school students. The aim of such attempts is to highlight changes in the linguistic phenomena of the region (multilingualism in the public space) and identify broadly defined attitudes and beliefs young people have towards them. When presented as a group, young people evoke progressive and increasingly differentiated multiculturalism understood as the multinationalism of the region identified with a multitude of languages present in the public space. The most frequently observed linguistic phenomena concern the triad of languages: German, English, Ukrainian in opposition to Polish. It is worth noting that among many languages mentioned none of it was referenced to as “dialect” as an independent language, separate from Polish and German. Young people showed different attitudes towards the linguistic differentiation of the region expressed, among others, through the existence of bilingual names of places, shops and institutions
