Starting from observations showing the deep reaching changes in the student body during the last 40 years or so : explosion in total enrollment, rise of vocational tracks, influx of students from low income groups, the document explores the financial dimension of student life in France. It first shows that the original features of education makes it imperative to separate the demand from the supply side. It then analyses the resources which contribute to student support and their different origins, showing the dominant influence of age, both on the total amount and on the structure of resources. It ends up by pointing out the partial and sometimes misleading character of purely quantitative indices.
