José Vicente del Olmo, secretario de la Santa Inquisición durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVII, formó parte del círculo academicista y preilustrado de la ciudad de Valencia que participó en la introducción de la ciencia moderna en España. Tras una primera etapa dedicada a la poesía y el arte de la emblemática en el contexto de una ciudad efímera y barroca, sus inquietudes intelectuales acabaron llevándole al estudio de la geografía, entendida como una rama de las ciencias físico-matemáticas. En este artículo se analiza esta trayectoria y se hace una primera aproximación a la obra cumbre de este autor: la Nueva Descripción del Orbe de la Tierra (1681). José Vicente del Olmo, secretary of the Holy Inquisition during the second half of the 17th century, formed part of the academic circle of the city of Valencia that took part in the introduction of the modern science in Spain. After the first stage dedicated to the poetry and the art of the emblematic one in the context of an ephemeral and baroque city, his intellectual worries finished taking him to the study of the geography, understood as a branch of the sciences physicist- mathematics. In this article this path is analyzed and the first approximation is done to the greatest work of this author: the New Description of the Orb of the Earth (1681).
