The main aim of this paper is to consider from different points of view the thesis of a conservative character of Peirce’s thought. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, arguments for Peirce’s conservatism are presented. They are of two kinds: inner ones (Peirce’s own declarations) and outer ones (a comparison of Peirce’s view o the views of two other classical pragmatists: James and Dewey). The second part of the paper is devoted to counterarguments – the main one is the fact that Peirce is an author of the conception of an unlimited community of inquirers. This conception was an inspiration to the vision of the world and social activities which were perceived as unambiguously progressive at the turn of the century in the United States.
