The main aim of this paper is to consider from different points of view the thesis of a conservative character of Peirce’s thought. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, arguments for Peirce’s conservatism are presented. They are of two kinds: inner ones (Peirce’s own declarations) and outer ones (a comparison of Peirce’s view o the views of two other classical pragmatists: James and Dewey). The second part of the paper is devoted to counterarguments – the main one is the fact that Peirce is an author of the conception of an unlimited community of inquirers.
