This research deals with the evolution of two of the main ciuitates of the Lugdunensis prima province. It explores their territorial organisation, social and economic structures between the emergence of the Gallic Empire (260 AD) and the end of the kingdom of the Burgundians (530 AD).After tackling the methodological, archeological and historical issues raised by the study of the two ciuitates, it focuses on the city of Autun, on its small neighbouring towns (including Chalon), rural areas and religious practices. The last part is a synthesis of the data, which is set in a historical and chronological framework. This part aims at highlighting the different stages of social developments in that key period of history
