Il lavoro di subcreazione che Tolkien porta avanti nelle sue opere si basa su due elementi principali: l’invenzione di lingue ricche e credibili e l’ideazione di un mondo geograficamente verosimile, veicolato da carte geografiche estremamente dettagliate. I toponimi presenti sulle carte sono quindi il trait d’union tra lingue e geografia e a loro sarà dedicato questo articolo. I toponimi del Signore degli Anelli, così come tutta la geopolitica della Terra di Mezzo, derivano direttamente dalle lingue antiche e dalla geografia europea dei tempi Tolkien: qui di seguito si analizzeranno dunque le differenze tra i toponimi originari e la loro resa nelle due principali traduzioni italiane. The sub-creation that Tolkien carries out in his works is based on two main elements: the invention of rich and convincing languages and the conception of a geographically plausible world, conveyed by extremely detailed maps. The toponyms on the maps are therefore the link between languages and geography, and this article will be dedicated to them. The toponyms of the Lord of the Rings, as well as all the geopolitics of Middle-earth, derive directly from the ancient languages and the European geography that Tolkien knew: below we will therefore analyze the differences between the original toponyms and their rendering in the two main Italian translations.
