description

The multinational Kievan Rus' state consisted of East Slavic peoples in the central region, Finno-Ugric tribes in the north, and Turkic tribes in the south. Foreigners also played a decisive role during the formation of the Kievan Rus' state (from the late 9th century onwards). First, the Vikings founded centres, one of which, Kiev, subjugated the others. Then the western, as well as eastern, empires extended their activities to the area. This was followed by contacts with the nomadic tribes of the steppe. In the process the population of Kievan Rus' became multinational. From all known sources (Latin, Greek, Arabic, Slavic, Scandinavian ... ) I have collected the names of every person mentioned in connection with Rus' until the death of Grand Prince Vladimir Monomakh. On the basis of this material I have tried to analyze the population of the state. Additionally, I have published these persons (1.259 in all) in a prosopographic catalogue.
