description

In the field of critical discourse analysis "bad faith" is hardly a concept and yet stands as an intuitive dimension of speech conventions. It spans across rhetorics, ethics, semantics, reasoning and argumentation. This article and the overall volume which it introduces is interested in trying to develop formal criteria to distinguish bad faith from denial, lying, or manipulation. The aim is to provide linguistic evidence of its inner workings in relation to pragmatical and psychological factors. As it appears in eristic contexts, it takes part in the global agonistic approach to interactions, in particular in arguments about politics, in media coverage and epistemological debates. Our claim is that instead of just debunking other people's bad faith, studying the sincerity of arguments may serve as a litmus test for consistency and clearer debates.
