Most past cost and finance studies of education have been limited by the lack of available data covering all aspects of the problem. As a consequence, the most widespread indicator at the international level has been for a long time the share of the GDP allocated to public education expenditure. Since about ten years, thanks to OECD initiative, new efforts have been undertaken in order to provide a better coverage of education cost and finance, in particular in the field of private expenditure. These new efforts have been extented to the adoption of a more comparable definition of education (early childhood education, adult education, aso). They have also included the elaboration of new indicators such as unit costs at different levels of education as a percentage of the GDP per capita or unit costs in an international currency calculated according to the purchasing power parity system. Several of these innovative methodologies have been presented in a OECD publication called "Education at a glance".
