Nell’immaginario collettivo la città di Agrigento è inscindibilmente legata al patrimonio archeologico della Valle dei Templi. Ma l’immagine di Agrigento è anche quella dell’abusivismo edilizio che dilaga nel territorio circostante addensandosi lungo la linea di costa, nonché quella del suo straordinario centro storico, degradato e in abbandono, ormai assediato dagli imponenti volumi edilizi, prodotto della speculazione edilizia degli anni ’50 e ‘60, e circondato da strade e viadotti. Nel riconoscere il paesaggio come risorsa identitaria, collegando quindi la nozione di identità a quella di memoria, di storia e di cultura, deve essere implicita un’ulteriore operazione che è quella di proiettare la nozione di identità anche nel futuro, guardando alla società di domani e alle generazioni che verranno. Ad Agrigento una crescente domanda sociale di rigenerazione del paesaggio rende evidente l’esigenza di una ri-significazione più complessiva dei luoghi spinta dal bisogno di reinterpretare creativamente l’incontro/scontro tra il patrimonio ereditato e l’imporsi di nuove identità. In the collective imagination the city of Agrigento is inextricably tied to the archaeological heritage of the Valley of the Temples. However, the image of Agrigento is also that of the illegal housing plaguing the surrounding territory and clogging the coastline, as well as that of its extraordinary historical centre, degraded and abandoned, besieged by the imposing building units, a product of the property speculation of the 1950s and 60s, and surrounded by roads and viaducts. Recognizing landscape as an identity resource, linking the notion of identity to those of memory, history and culture, necessarily implies a further operation: that of projecting the notion of identity into the future, with an eye to the society of tomorrow and the generations to come. In Agrigento, a growing social demand for landscape regeneration expresses the exigency of a more comprehensive reappraisal of the areas, driven by the need to creatively reinterpret the meeting/clash between the inherited heritage and the new identities that have imposed themselves.
