In the article linguistic behaviour of residents of a part Olesno district has been presented. The above mentioned area (excluding the communes of Praszka and Rudniki) historically belongs to Silesia. In the survey two methods have been applied: firstly, that of a questionnaire, in which respondents declared the use of an appropriate language code depending on the communicative situation, and -secondly-the method of direct observation. In both cases the achieved results are generally consistent. Silesia dialect used in the Olesno distrct plays an important role, it is a system of communication that serves the sphere of Silesia families’ everyday life. The dialect is also used in the public space, more often in the country, but in the cities, too. The places where the residents of the test area tend to avoid using dialect are following: offices, school, church. The factors decisive as to the choice of a proper code are: age, education, social background, occupation and a communicative situation. While facing strangers speaking standard Polish language, the users of the dialect tend to use standard Polish as well. Vitality of the Silesia dialect at Olesno district results from the declared attachment to a given person’s own speech. Still, from direct observation of linguistic behaviour a conclusion can be drawn that Silesia dialect has been undergoing changes; those who use it tend to avoid features considered to be typical of countrymen, e.g. speaking Mazurian dialect.
