description

Railway workers' movements, demonstrations against the reform of the Labour Code, strikes against the new pension system... Collective action by employees regularly polarises social news in France. However, it is not limited to these media phenomena and the disruption of daily life that they cause. It primarily concerns everyday life at work, the participation of employees in the management of companies and administrations and, more broadly, in that of the social protection system. Trade unions have a key role to play in this collective action. This book analyses the evolution of these organisations as vectors of collective action: their successes and failures, their relations with employees. Based on original data and a comparative analysis of the main industrial countries, combining a socio-historical perspective, an analysis of industrial relations and political sociology, the book also seeks to move away from conventional discourse on the subject to provide a new reading highlighting the functioning, resources and audience of trade union organisations.
