description

Since the international colloquium organized in Toulouse in 2008, “ Decoration and architecture in Gaul, from Antiquity to Early Middle Ages : mosaic, wall-painting, stucco ”, the combine study of the antique architectural surfaces has been brought forward, which allowed to shed some new light on various aspects of the subject, particularly with regard to the function. To answer the question, the geographical area studied is composed of three bordering civitates where some important elements of decoration were discovered, from the first century B.-C. to the fifth century A.-C, from the beginning to the end of the Gallo-roman period. The architectural surfaces show first the adaptation of the Roman culture, as well as the ostentatious function demanded by rich owners of the late Antiquity.Besides the inherent and main esthetic function of the Gallo-Roman architectural surfaces, we have to ask ourselves about the other reasons for these elements’ presence. By studying the various materials used and the iconography which is on wall-paintings, stuccos or mosaics, we can make sense of the ostentatious function. Finally, the architectural surfaces reflect the way of life for both society and individuals. They are, indeed, elements of Romanization and correspond to personal choices inherent to an owner in the case of a private building, or to a whole community, in the case of public buildings.
