The aim of the doctoral dissertation “Adolescent value development at a hip-hop culture dance school” is to study dance as a component of hip-hop culture and to reveal pedagogical means of adolescent value development at a hip-hop culture dance school. The research process and its results are described in two chapters. The first chapter analyses the notion of values, essence and components of hip-hop culture from the aspects of values and pedagogical process organisation. The values characteristic to adolescence have been detected along with their development possibilities within the pedagogical process of dance acquisition. Based on research on value theories, hip-hop culture dance as a means of adolescent value orientation and value development was analysed. The criteria that determine adolescent value development were defined and theoretically justified: selfaffirmation, self-expression, self-growth and self-preservation. An adolescent value development model for a hip-hop culture dance school was developed and theoretically justified, which reveals correlation between activity aim and its implementation through cooperation, as well as results. The second chapter analyses the empirical research process in order to test adolescent value acquisition at a hip-hop culture dance school, by experimentally testing the value development model. By applying qualitative and quantitative research methods, results of the experimental activity were analysed. The obained results were summarised and allow drawing conclusions on the way the values of experiment participants – adolescents – had changed during the experiment at a hip-hop culture dance school. It has been proved that adolescent value development at a hip-hop culture dance school is more successful if the activity process at a dance school is being planned, organised and implemented by ensuring mutual cooperation possibilities and if the pedagogical process provides personality self-expression and self-affirmation possibilities, individuality awareness and a creative approach and growth. The study is of scientific and practical value, as for the very first time in the pedagogical science of Latvia hip-hop culture dance is studied as a pedagogical means for adolescent value development at a dance school and a broadened hip-hop culture defition and basic terms are developed. Through this study hip-hop dance methodology and its application have been improved in formal and informal education of Latvia. The basic text comprises 145 pages. The statistical data obtained in the course of the study are presented in the 18 attachments. The literature list contains 159 srouces.
