description

The 25th anniversary of the first Theological Faculty of the Opole University (the first created in a state university in Poland after 1945) is an opportunity to evoke its history and activities. The first chapter, by Mons. Alfons Nossol (Why the Opole region does need the University?), one of fathers of the University, describes the first efforts of Opole academic community in the early 1980’s to create the University in Opole. In the second chapter (From the Affiliated Faculty of KUL to the Faculty of Theology of Opole University), Rev. Helmut J. Sobeczko, the first Dean of the Faculty, explains the history of Opole theological community, indicating its sources in the Theological Seminary founded in 1949; in the 1980s it became Affiliated Faculty of the Catholic University in Lublin (KUL), and in 1994 one of the faculties on the new Opole University. The following chapters describe fields of studies of the Faculty. Rev. Andrzej Demitrów (The Bible: God’s word for the world) shows in the wide context the Biblical studies at the Opole Theological Faculty, and presents other areas where the words of the Holy Scripture are read and pondered today, namely the Church’s Liturgy, personal Bible reading, and systematic scientific studies of the sacred texts. Rev. Krystian Kałuża (Place of the theology at university and the public space) proposes a reflection on critical reception of theology: the author emphasizes the methodology of theology and what is its goal, analyzing the issue of the nature of Jesus Christ and the action of God in the world; we need theology to speak in responsible way about God and to communicate the faith. Rev. Radosław Chałupniak, Dean of the Faculty (Reality correlated: Religious education at Polish school and the Faculty of Theology in Opole) describes the return of the religious education to Polish schools in 1990 and its importance in the contemporary situation of increasing secularization of social and personal life. In the contemporary chaos of values and principles of education the religious education remains a topical, interesting and important proposal for school. Rev. Marek Lis (Film from the theological perspective) supports the idea of the dialogue between theology and the visual arts, particularly the film, in the world dominated by audiovisual texts. Today, theological meanings are present also in the popular culture, thus films, as loci theologici, need attention of the theology. The Annex contains several documents important for the history of the Faculty of Theology of Opole University (honoris causa doctorate for John Paul II; homilies of Bishop Jan Kopiec and Archbishop Alfons Nossol).
