La cooperazione internazionale allo sviluppo. Costruire sull’esperienza. Presentazione

2018

Quantum aspects originated by Gravitation: from cosmology to astrophysics

2018

The Old Guard Under a New Order: K. O. Friedrichs Meets Felix Klein

2018

Constance Reid’s recent tribute to K. O. Friedrichs (Reid 1983) undoubtedly brought back fond memories to those who knew the man and his many achievements (see also Reid 1986). It was a great pleasure for me to interview Friedrichs in January 1982, only about a year before his death. He was already in very delicate health. His wife Nellie (see Biegel 2012) was kind enough to arrange the interview, but warned me beforehand that her husband tired rather easily and was somewhat hard of hearing. Nevertheless, he was extremely forthcoming in discussing his early career with me, and quick to dismiss some of my faulty misconceptions regarding Gottingen mathematics in the 1920s, which was the main …

The Dynamics of the Global Multinationals: Determinants of New Global Configurations and New Management Challenges

2018

During the last few decades, the complex interplay between (the process of) globalization and (the evolution of global) multinationals has radically changed both the architecture of the global economy and the characteristics of their main players – the global multinationals; new configurations have emerged, while new complexities have replaced them, in unprecedented (in terms of speed, breadth, and depth) manners, adding new valences to the challenges firms and their strategists are confronting nowadays. The aim of the paper is to identify (some of) the most significant shifts that have marked the dynamics of the global multinationals during the last two decades, in order to sketch the new …

Synthesis of α-aminonitriles using aliphatic nitriles, α-amino acids, and hexacyanoferrate as universally applicable non-toxic cyanide sources

2018

In cyanation reactions, the cyanide source is often directly added to the reaction mixture, which restricts the choice of conditions. The spatial separation of cyanide release and consumption offers higher flexibility instead. Such a setting was used for the cyanation of iminium ions with a variety of different easy-to-handle HCN sources such as hexacyanoferrate, acetonitrile or α-amino acids. The latter substrates were first converted to their corresponding nitriles through oxidative decarboxylation. While glycine directly furnishes HCN in the oxidation step, the aliphatic nitriles derived from α-substituted amino acids can be further converted into the corresponding cyanohydrins in an oxi…

Impact of Demographic Differences on Color Preferences in the Interface Design of e-Services in Latvia

2018

In our study, we test users’ color preferences of interfaces of typical electronic services’ (e-services) environment. The motivation of our study is to explore discrepancy between (a) the high degree of availability of e-services in Latvia, and (b) low usage of these e-services among population. We aim to find the regularities regarding color preferences that could be useful in the development of e-services and that could support the rise of the usage of e-services in future. Although there are several reasons why people avoid using e-services (some of them socio-cognitive, some – technological), we would like to focus on a particular aspect – the colors of e-services interface. In particu…

The Fate Choice Between Effector and Memory T Cell Lineages: Asymmetry, Signal Integration, and Feedback to Create Bistability

2018

Abstract CD8+ T cells clear primary infections with intracellular pathogens and provide long-term immunity against reinfection. Two different types of CD8+ T cells are responsible for these functions: short-lived effector T cells and memory T cells. The cellular relationship between these two types of CD8+ T cells has been subject to much investigation. Both cell types can derive from a single naive CD8+ T cell precursor. Their generation requires a fate choice early during a T cell response. As a result, two populations of T cells emerge. One of these consists of terminally differentiated short-lived effector T cells. The other contains cells able to develop into long-lived memory T cells.…

Dance Like Someone is Watching

2018

Although dancing often takes place in social contexts such as a club or party, previous study of such music-induced movement has focused mainly on individuals. The current study explores music-induced movement in a naturalistic dyadic context, focusing on the influence of personality, using five-factor model (FFM) traits, and trait empathy on participants’ responses to their partners. Fifty-four participants were recorded using motion capture while dancing to music excerpts alone and in dyads with three different partners, using a round-robin approach. Analysis using the Social Relations Model (SRM) suggested that the unique combination of each pair caused more variation in participants’ a…

The finite element implementation of 3D fractional viscoelastic constitutive models

2018

Abstract The aim of this paper is to present the implementation of 3D fractional viscoelastic constitutive theory presented in Alotta et al., 2016 [1]. Fractional viscoelastic models exactly reproduce the time dependent behaviour of real viscoelastic materials which exhibit a long “fading memory”. From an implementation point of view, this feature implies storing the stress/strain history throughout the simulations which may require a large amount of memory. We propose here a number of strategies to effectively limit the memory required. The form of the constitutive equations are summarized and the finite element implementation in a Newton-Raphson integration scheme is described in detail. …

Crystalline-Size Dependence of Dual Emission Peak on Hybrid Organic Lead-Iodide Perovskite Films at Low Temperatures

2018

In this work, we have investigated the crystalline-size dependence of optical absorption and photoluminescence emission of CH3NH3PbI3 films, which is necessary to identify the potential practical applications of the gadgets based on perovskite films. This study was carried out at low temperatures to minimize the extra complexity induced by thermal effects. The purpose was to clarify the origin of the dual emission peak previously reported in the literature. We found that the grain size is responsible for the appearance or disappearance of this dual emission on CH3NH3PbI3 at low temperatures, whereas we have inferred that the thickness of the perovskite layer is a much more important factor …

Flowers, Water accumulation and Corporate Social Responsibility: Certification of the Production of Roses and Claims for Environmental Justice in Ecu…

2018

Aspen Plus process-simulation model: Producing biogas from VOC emissions in an anaerobic bioscrubber

2018

A process-simulation model for a novel process consisted of an anaerobic bioscrubber was developed in Aspen Plus®. A novel approach was performed to implement the anaerobic reactor in the simulation, enabling it to be connected to the scrubber. The model was calibrated and validated using data from an industrial prototype that converted air emissions polluted with volatile organic compounds with an average daily concentration of 1129 mgC Nm−3 into bioenergy for more than one year. The scrubber, which showed a removal efficiency within 83-93%, was successfully predicted with an average absolute relative error of 5.2 ± 0.08% using an average height-to-theoretical-plate value of 1.05 ± 0.08 m …

2018

[EN] Members of the Junctophilin (JPH) protein family have emerged as key actors in all excitable cells, with crucial implications for human pathophysiology. In mammals, this family consists of four members (JPH1-JPH4) that are differentially expressed throughout excitable cells. The analysis of knockout mice lacking JPH subtypes has demonstrated their essential contribution to physiological functions in skeletal and cardiac muscles and in neurons. Moreover, mutations in the human JPH2 gene are associated with hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathies; mutations in JPH3 are responsible for the neurodegenerative Huntington's disease-like-2 (HDL2), whereas JPH1 acts as a genetic modifier in C…

Indications for Locoregional Tumor Therapies: CRC Liver Metastases

2018

The liver represents the most affected site in patients affected by colorectal carcinoma (mCRC) [1]. More than half cases develop colorectal liver metastases (CLMs) during the evolution of the disease, and about one-quarter occur at the disease onset [1, 2]. To date, the standard treatment of CLM is represented by liver surgery, which has allowed to achieve interesting long-term survival rates (40-60%) [3] in reported series, while it is less than 25% for patients who do not undergo surgery [4]. Unfortunately, most patients (80%), however, are not immediately eligible for surgery [5, 6]. For these patients, surgical treatment may be administered in combination with chemotherapy regimens (+/…

Synthesis of Densely Packaged, Ultrasmall Pt02Clusters within a Thioether-Functionalized MOF: Catalytic Activity in Industrial Reactions at Low Tempe…

2018

The gram-scale synthesis, stabilization, and characterization of well-defined ultrasmall subnanometric catalytic clusters on solids is a challenge. The chemical synthesis and X-ray snapshots of Pt02 clusters, homogenously distributed and densely packaged within the channels of a metal-organic framework, is presented. This hybrid material catalyzes efficiently, and even more importantly from an economic and environmental viewpoint, at low temperature (25 to 140 °C), energetically costly industrial reactions in the gas phase such as HCN production, CO2 methanation, and alkene hydrogenations. These results open the way for the design of precisely defined catalytically active ultrasmall metal c…

2018
