'Aesthetic Controversies?'

2017

International audience; My presentation will be devoted to the study of one remarkable Aesthetic controversy, the ‘Fleshly School of Poetry’ opposing Robert Buchanan, poet and, at the time, literary journalist, and some aesthetes including William Morris, Algernon Charles Swinburne and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The controversy erupted when Buchanan published a violent attack, ‘The Fleshly School of Poetry’ under the pseudonym of Thomas Maitland in the Contemporary Review in 1871, and lasted, I’ll argue, until the early 1880s. This case study is part of a larger project retracing the history of British Aestheticism through the many controversies, scandals and polemics the movement elicited fro…

2010

The author uses the films of David Cronenberg as a basis to study the relation between cinematographic strategies of fright and horror. The first are often based on an opposition between the on- and off-camera, while the latter seem to rely on the shot/reverse-shot technique. In this sense, The Brood (1979) provides an interesting shift from fright to horror. The author aims at understanding the term “body horror” which has been associated with Cronenberg's films from the start. The author defines it as the moment when matter does not signify before various discourses (scientific, aesthetic) endow it with a form of nature.

Synthesized benzamido derivatives exert antiproliferative effects by DNA damage and ROS generation.

2016

In this study we explored the effect and the biological action of synthesized benzamido derivatives bearing the (1S,2S)-2-phenyl-cyclopropane-1-carboxamido, 1,1'-biphen-2-carboxamido and 1,1'-biphen-4-carboxamido moieties on K562, a human leukemia cell line. Among the synthesized compounds a particular antiproliferative action was observed with the benzamido derivative bearing the 2-1,1'-biphenyl moiety with the substitution at the 5 position of the benzamido moiety with iodine. This compound showed cytotoxic effects in K562 leukemic cells at nanomolar concentrations and was, therefore, chosen as compound to explore its mode of action. Our analyses provided evidence that this benzamido deri…

Polskie oddziały wojskowe w służbie rosyjskiej w latach 1793-1794. Przyczynki źródłowe

2017

The article discusses, on the basis both of the literaturę on the subject and archival materials preserved in two Russian archives, the fate of military units from the Crown and Lithuanian Army of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which in the spring-summer of 1793 were taken to the Russian service. Initially, they had ca. 24 thousand soldiers, but the Russian decided to disband some of the units, while reducing the number of others, thus the number of the servicemen decreased to 15 thousand. The least reduced was the garrison of Kamianets-Podilskyi, for in the service of Empress Catherine II stayed two almost non-reduced infantry regiments of the former Polish Army and part of artillery …
