Rapid development of Epstein-Barr virus-associated Hodgkin's disease after cessation of foscarnet therapy in an HIV-infected patient.

Epidemiological features suggest a link between Hodgkin's disease (HD) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection1. Indeed, EBV genome and expression of latent antigens can be found in Reed-Sternberg cells. In the majority of cases HD in HIV patients seems to be EBV-associated. We report on a 51-year-old HIV-infected patient in whom EBV-positive HD of mixed cellularity rapidly developed within one month after cessation of treatment with intravenous foscarnet.

Leishmania parasites are able to undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death), similarly to mammalian cells. Recently it was demonstrated in vitro the anti-leishmanial effect of some natural and synthetic stilbenoids including resveratrol and piceatannol. In this study we evaluated the Leishmanicidal activity of a pool of stilbene derivatives which had previously shown high apoptotic efficacy against neoplastic cells. All the compounds tested were capable to decrease the parasite viability in a dose-dependent manner. Trans-stilbenes proved to be markedly more effective than cis-isomers. The prothrombinase-induced clotting time assay (PiCT, Pentapharm, Basel, Switzerland) is a clotting assay sensitive to factor Xa and factor IIa inhibitors. It is based on the addition of factor Xa and snake venom RVV-V (Russell viper venom factor V activator) specifically activating factor V and phospholipids to platelet-poor plasma. Following an incubation time, the mixture is recalcified and the clotting time is determined.
