Tetraspanin CD151 Mediates Papillomavirus Type 16 Endocytosis

2013

ABSTRACT Human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) is the primary etiologic agent for cervical cancer. The infectious entry of HPV16 into cells occurs via a so-far poorly characterized clathrin- and caveolin-independent endocytic pathway, which involves tetraspanin proteins and actin. In this study, we investigated the specific role of the tetraspanin CD151 in the early steps of HPV16 infection. We show that surface-bound HPV16 moves together with CD151 within the plane of the membrane before they cointernalize into endosomes. Depletion of endogenous CD151 did not affect binding of viral particles to cells but resulted in reduction of HPV16 endocytosis. HPV16 uptake is dependent on the C-termina…

Syphilis 2001 a palaeopathological reappraisal

2002

The origin and subsequent spread of the treponematoses, especially that of venereal syphilis, has been the subject of considerable scientific attention. Various theories were put forth and palaeopathological specimens were used for their validation in recent times. One influential contribution was the paper by Baker & Armelagos in 1988. Numerous new findings and results on both sides of the Atlantic call for a new evaluation of the available osseous material. A review of the recent literature leads to the suggestion of a worldwide distribution of non-venereal treponemal disease since the emergence of Homo and to a first epidemic outbreak of venereal syphilis in Europe of the late 15th and t…

A mitochondrial phylogeography of Brachidontes variabilis (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) reveals three cryptic species

2007

This study examined genetic variation across the range of Brachidontes variabilis to produce a molecular phylogeography. Neighbour joining (NJ), minimum evolution (ME) and maximum parsimony (MP) trees based on partial mitochondrial DNA sequences of 16S-rDNA and cytochrome oxidase (COI) genes revealed three monophyletic clades: (1) Brachidontes pharaonis s.l. from the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea; (2) B. variabilis from the Indian Ocean; (3) B. variabilis from the western Pacific Ocean. Although the three clades have never been differentiated by malacologists employing conventional morphological keys, they should be ascribed to the taxonomic rank of species. The nucleotide divergences b…

A possible solution of the puzzling variation of the orbital period of MXB 1659-298

2017

MXB 1659-298 is a transient neutron star Low-Mass X-ray binary system that shows eclipses with a periodicity of 7.1 hr. The source went to outburst in August 2015 after 14 years of quiescence. We investigate the orbital properties of this source with a baseline of 40 years obtained combining the eight eclipse arrival times present in literature with 51 eclipse arrival times collected during the last two outbursts. A quadratic ephemeris does not fit the delays associated with the eclipse arrival times and the addition of a sinusoidal term with a period of $2.31 \pm 0.02$ yr is required. We infer a binary orbital period of $P=7.1161099(3)$ hr and an orbital period derivative of $\dot{P}=-8.5(…

Starting from a recent decision of the Tribunal of Catanzaro the contribution examines the question of the discretionary margins of the recruiting public administration in individual voluntary mobility procedures pursuant to article 30 paragraph 1 legislative decree no. 165/2001. Specifically it deals with the phase of evaluation of the candidates’ professional skills. This provides an opportunity to reflect on the nature of the institute also in the context of the most recent legislative reforms.Settore IUS/07 - Diritto Del Lavoro

DySC: software for greedy clustering of 16S rRNA reads.

2012

Abstract Summary: Pyrosequencing technologies are frequently used for sequencing the 16S ribosomal RNA marker gene for profiling microbial communities. Clustering of the produced reads is an important but time-consuming task. We present Dynamic Seed-based Clustering (DySC), a new tool based on the greedy clustering approach that uses a dynamic seeding strategy. Evaluations based on the normalized mutual information (NMI) criterion show that DySC produces higher quality clusters than UCLUST and CD-HIT at a comparable runtime. Availability and implementation: DySC, implemented in C, is available at http://code.google.com/p/dysc/ under GNU GPL license. Contact:  bertil.schmidt@uni-mainz.de Sup…

Lévy–Khintchine decompositions for generating functionals on algebras associated to universal compact quantum groups

2018

We study the first and second cohomology groups of the $^*$-algebras of the universal unitary and orthogonal quantum groups $U_F^+$ and $O_F^+$. This provides valuable information for constructing and classifying L\'evy processes on these quantum groups, as pointed out by Sch\"urmann. In the case when all eigenvalues of $F^*F$ are distinct, we show that these $^*$-algebras have the properties (GC), (NC), and (LK) introduced by Sch\"urmann and studied recently by Franz, Gerhold and Thom. In the degenerate case $F=I_d$, we show that they do not have any of these properties. We also compute the second cohomology group of $U_d^+$ with trivial coefficients -- $H^2(U_d^+,{}_\epsilon\Bbb{C}_\epsil…

Marinifilum flexuosum sp. nov., a new Bacteroidetes isolated from coastal Mediterranean Sea water and emended description of the genus Marinifilum Na…

2012

Abstract A facultatively anaerobe, moderately halophilic, Gram-negative, filamentous, non motile and unpigmented bacterium, designated M30 T , was isolated from coastal Mediterranean Sea water in Valencia, Spain. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA sequences placed this strain in the phylum “ Bacteroidetes ” with Marinifilum fragile JC2469 T as its closest relative with 97% sequence similarity. Average nucleotide identity (ANI) values between both strains were far below the 95% threshold value for species delineation (about 89% using BLAST and about 90% using MUMmer). A comprehensive polyphasic study, including morphological, biochemical, physiological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic d…
