The first wave of the Spanish COVID-19 epidemic was associated with early introductions and fast spread of a dominating genetic variant
2020
The COVID-19 pandemic has shaken the world since the beginning of 2020. Spain is among the European countries with the highest incidence of the disease during the first pandemic wave. We established a multidisciplinar consortium to monitor and study the evolution of the epidemic, with the aim of contributing to decision making and stopping rapid spreading across the country. We present the results for 2170 sequences from the first wave of the SARS-Cov-2 epidemic in Spain and representing 12% of diagnosed cases until 14th March. This effort allows us to document at least 500 initial introductions, between early February-March from multiple international sources. Importantly, we document the …
Emergence and spread of a SARS-CoV-2 variant through Europe in the summer of 2020.
2020
A variant of SARS-CoV-2 emerged in early summer 2020, presumably in Spain, and has since spread to multiple European countries. The variant was first observed in Spain in June and has been at frequencies above 40% since July. Outside of Spain, the frequency of this variant has increased from very low values prior to 15th July to 40-70% in Switzerland, Ireland, and the United Kingdom in September. It is also prevalent in Norway, Latvia, the Netherlands, and France. Little can be said about other European countries because few recent sequences are available. Sequences in this cluster (20A.EU1) differ from ancestral sequences at 6 or more positions, including the mutation A222V in the spike pr…
High prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in pets from COVID-19+ households
2020
AbstractIn a survey of household cats and dogs of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients, we found a high seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, ranging from 21% to 53%, depending on the positivity criteria chosen. Seropositivity was significantly greater among pets from COVID-19+ households compared to those with owners of unknown status. Our results highlight the potential role of pets in the spread of the epidemic.
Drivers of food waste reduction behaviour in the household context
2021
Studies on the drivers of household consumer engagement in various food waste reduction strategies have been limited. We thus address this gap by developing a research model that utilises two well-known theories, namely, the Theory of Interpersonal Behaviour (TIB) and the Comprehensive Model of Environmental Psychology (CMEP), to explain food waste reduction behaviour in household consumers. The model hypothesises positive associations between emotional, social, and cognitive factors and food waste reduction behaviour, as conceptualised using the 3Rs (reuse, reduce, and recycle). A total of 515 U.S. household consumers participated in the cross-sectional survey. The results suggest that emo…
Facilitators and inhibitors of organic food buying behavior
2021
Abstract Consumption patterns across the globe indicate consumers’ rising interest in purchasing organic food due to increasing personal-health consciousness. However, research on organic food shows a low translation of this interest into stated preferences for purchasing organic food. Limited academic research has explored this puzzling buying behavior of consumers, particularly in developed economies such as Japan. Our study addresses this gap by examining the factors that facilitate or inhibit Japanese consumers’ buying behavior toward organic food. We use the Stimulus-Organism-Response framework, Innovation Resistance Theory, and Dual-Factor Theory to examine these factors by analyzing …
Discursive framing and organizational venues: mechanisms of artificial intelligence policy adoption
2021
The purpose of this article is twofold: to theoretically assess ideational and organizational explanatory factors in the adoption of artificial intelligence policies; and to examine the extent to which the European Union has managed to facilitate a coordinated artificial intelligence policy in the Nordic countries. The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach based on systematic web searching, systematic policy document analysis and key informant semi-structured interviews. The study finds that the European Union has utilized framing-based strategies to set an agenda for a coordinated European artificial intelligence policy. Moreover, the strategy has affected member-state artificial intell…
Autoradiographic imaging of altered synaptic αβγ2 and extrasynaptic αβ GABAA receptors in a genetic mouse model of anxiety
2004
Abstract To image the possible alterations in brain regional GABAA receptor subtype properties in a genetic animal model of human anxiety, mice heterozygous for the deletion of GABAA receptor γ2 subunit (γ2+/−) were studied using ligand autoradiographic assays on brain cryostat sections. The [ 35 S ]TBPS binding assay was designed to reveal impaired GABA and channel site coupling shown to be more prominent in recombinant α1/6β3 than in α1/2β3γ2 or β2 subunit-containing GABAA receptors expressed in HEK 293 cells. Increased GABA-insensitive [ 35 S ]TBPS binding in the γ2+/− mouse brains was evident in the cerebral cortex and in subcortical regions, the alterations being regionally similar to …

While there has been considerable research on students with special educational needs and their parents’ participation at individual subject curriculum (ISC) meetings at school, less attention has ...
[Management of patients with lymphatic diseases and lipoedema during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recommendations of the Spanish Group of Lymphology].
2020
