Neural dynamics of learning sound-action associations.

2008

A motor component is pre-requisite to any communicative act as one must inherently move to communicate. To learn to make a communicative act, the brain must be able to dynamically associate arbitrary percepts to the neural substrate underlying the pre-requisite motor activity. We aimed to investigate whether brain regions involved in complex gestures (ventral pre-motor cortex, Brodmann Area 44) were involved in mediating association between novel abstract auditory stimuli and novel gestural movements. In a functional resonance imaging (fMRI) study we asked participants to learn associations between previously unrelated novel sounds and meaningless gestures inside the scanner. We use functio…

Analysis of thiamine transporter genes in sporadic beriberi

2014

Abstract Objective Thiamine or vitamin B 1 deficiency diminishes thiamine-dependent enzymatic activity, alters mitochondrial function, impairs oxidative metabolism, and causes selective neuronal death. We analyzed for the first time, the role of all known mutations within three specific thiamine carrier genes, SLC19 A2, SLC19 A3 , and SLC25 A19 , in a patient with atrophic beriberi, a multiorgan nutritional disease caused by thiamine deficiency. Methods A 44-year-old male alcoholic patient from Morocco developed massive bilateral leg edema, a subacute sensorimotor neuropathy, and incontinence. Despite normal vitamin B 1 serum levels, his clinical picture was rapidly reverted by high-dose in…

We analyzed for the first time the role of all known mutations within three specific thiamine carrier genes SLC19 A2 SLC19 A3 and SLC25 A19 in a patient with atrophic beriberi a multiorgan nutritional disease caused by thiamine deficiency. Methods: A 44-year-old male alcoholic patient from Morocco developed massive bilateral leg edema a subacute sensorimotor neuropathy and incontinence. Despite normal vitamin B1 serum levels his clinical picture was rapidly reverted by high-dose intramuscular thiamine treatment suggesting a possible genetic resistance. We used polymerase chain reaction followed by amplicon sequencing to study all the known thiamine-related gene mutations identified within the Human Gene Mutation Database. Results: Thirty-seven mutations were tested: 29 in SLC19 A2 6 in SLC19 A3 and 2 in SLC25 A19. Mutational analyses showed a wild-type genotype for all sequences investigated. Conclusion: This is the first genetic study in beriberi disease. We did not detect any known mutation in any of the three genes in a sporadic dry beriberi patient. We cannot exclude a role for other known or unknown mutations in the same genes or in other thiamine-associated genes in the occurrence of this nutritional neuropathy.HumansThiamineGenePolymerase chain reactionGeneticsMutationNutrition and DieteticsbiologyMembrane Transport ProteinsThiamine Deficiencymedicine.diseaseAlcoholismEndocrinologyMutationbiology.proteinThiamineMutations

Gluten-free flours from cereals, pseudocereals and legumes: Phenolic fingerprints and in vitro antioxidant properties.

2018

The interest in gluten-free (GF) products increases together with the increase in gluten-sensitive people. However, GF foods might have decreased nutritional quality as compared to the gluten containing counterparts. In this work, an investigation of the phenolic and antioxidant profile in 18 GF flours belonging to legumes, cereals and pseudocereals was achieved. Significant differences could be observed across samples. Total phenolic content was highest in violet rice flours, whereas total anthocyanins were highest in violet, nerone, and black rice flours. FRAP and ORAC antioxidant activities were correlated to phenolic contents and found to be higher in violet rice flours. Metabolomics hi…

Development of La3+ Doped CeOthick film humidity sensors

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Abstract and Applied Analysis. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/297632 Open Access The humidity sensitive characteristics of the sensor fabricated from 10 mol% Ladoped CeOnanopowders with particle size 17.26 nm synthesized via hydrothermal method were investigated at different frequencies. It was found that the sensor shows high humidity sensitivity, rapid response-recovery characteristics, and narrow hysteresis loop at 100 Hz in the relative humidity range from 11% to 95%. The impedance of the sensor decreases by about five orders of magnitude as relative humidity increases. The maximum humidity hysteresis …

Chemical Vapour Deposition of Pure Titanium Using a Heated Wire Reactor and TiI4

2017

Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2017 An experimental reactor system has been optimized throughout a series of experiments for making titanium tubes from an electrically heated titanium coil filament by a chemical vapour deposition method, based on the original van Arkel-de Boer -process. The titanium is thermally decomposed on the filament from vapourized titanium tetraiodide in a method not seen in similar experiments. The small-scale reactor is built for this purpose, and the associated systems and methods are developed to maintain the optimal conditions for a continuous metal deposition. A filament current control system is made of an Arduino micro-controlle…

Pyrolytic formation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons from steroid hormones

2011

Author's version of an article published in Food Chemisty, 124 (4), 1466-1472. Also available from the publisher: hhtp://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.foodchem.2010.07.109 Four steroid hormones, namely androsterone, cholesterol, estrone and estradiol, have been pyrolysed at 300, 400 and 500 °C and the pyrolysates from these have been analysed by GC-MS. The results indicate that these formed different products under the pyrolysis and most of them evolved into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during their residence in the pyrolysis chamber at high temperatures. The products from the pyrolysates, at all temperatures, were analysed for similarities and differences using multivariate data analysis. The p…
